What could you earn in medical device sales?

By Tommy Currie

If you're working in medical device sales, it pays to know about pay.

So you're working in medical device sales. Maybe you're thinking of making a career move in the next few months. Or maybe you're wondering if you're being paid enough by your current employer. Either way, the topic of salaries in the market is likely to crop up from time to time and get you wondering.

So what can you expect to earn? And what's impacting salary levels right now?

If you're a Territory Manager...

… you can expect to earn between £48,000 - £50,000 if you're based in the UK. If you're in Europe, the range is slightly larger and very much depends on where you're based, but on average falls between €50,000 - €90,000. And if you're in the US you're looking at between $85,000 and $95,000.

Your bonus can fall anywhere between 20% - 50%, although we usually see the higher end of that bracket in the US over Europe. These days, it's common for businesses to offer uncapped bonuses too to encourage their top sellers to overperform. The earning potential can be great!

There are two key things that influence salary at this level of seniority (beyond geographical location), product speciality and territory size/potential. Higher tech devices like robotics or AI-enabled tools typically need more specialist knowledge to sell, and with that knowledge can often come a higher price tag. Similarly larger or more competitive regions can provide bigger opportunities, particularly on the commission front. But they also pose a challenge!

If you're a Regional Sales Manager...

… you're looking at an average salary of £65,000 - £75,000 in the UK, with bonus sitting around 30%. For Europe, the figure is around €75,000 - €120,000 with a 20% bonus. And in the US average salaries are between $100,000 and $120,000, with a 50% bonus.

The factors impacting salary are largely the same as those for Territory Managers, but at this level your remuneration is likely to be impacted by the size of your team and its performance, too. Because you're responsible for performance across a region, this impacts both base salary but also overall earning potential  as you may start to receive management-level bonuses tied to team quota performance, regional growth targets, and sometimes even strategic initiatives.

If you're a National Sales Manager...

… and you're UK based, the average salary is between £80,000 and £85,000. In Europe, it's €90,000 - €140,000. And in the US you can expect to earn $150,000 - $200,000. We tend to see bonuses sit between 30% and 50%.

Some employers also hire Business Unit Managers, who on average earn around 15% higher than National Sales Managers, but remuneration follows a similar structure.

In a lot of locations the average salary range becomes a lot wider at this level. This is due to a number of factors, with the one making the biggest impact being team scope and structure. We typically see salaries rise in line with team size and direct report count, and a complex organisational structure - often seen in larger employers - can also have an impact here. The same can be said for the sales model and role-specific targets you're working under. If you're volume-selling this can have a lower base but higher and more regular bonus payments, but if you're managing longer-cycle deals this can come with a higher base.

If you're a Sales Director...

… based in the UK, you're likely to earn between £120,000 and £130,000, and bonus figures can reach up to 50%. For those based in Europe, the average basic salary is €140,000 - €190,000 with a 50% bonus.

In the US employers will more typically make VP Sales hires, a slightly more senior role. At this level you can expect to earn $250,000 - $350,000.

One of the biggest factors that influences remuneration at this level is the incentive structure around growth that a business has. If you're launching a new division or product this often comes hand in hand with larger quotas, launch bonuses, and sometimes lucrative accelerators for if you and your team overachieve on target. This can have a huge impact on your OTE.

At this level we also begin to see executive level benefits cropping up in overall compensation plans. For more information on this, check out our latest C-Suite Salary Report here.
