Motivations to Move - What is pushing talent towards a career move

Nearly 50% of employees in Europe are open to moving roles in 2025!
Last month, we saw murmurings around 'The Great Resignation 2.0' which suggested that there was the potential for nearly half of the European workforce to look for (or at least be open to) moving roles this year. The first 'Great Resignation' came in the US in 2021, right after the peak of the COVID pandemic when workers saw their priorities shift towards flexible working, or they left their roles due to the treatment they received from their employer in turbulent times. With this in mind, we thought we'd get in touch with our network to hear their thoughts on this and what would be the most influential factor for them to move roles...
No clear career progression
36% of respondents stated that a lack of clear career progression in their current role would be a key factor in their decision to seek a new job. A clear pathway up the ranks in a company means a great deal to employees, particularly those in junior or entry-level roles. If you're a manager who doesn't want to lose their best talent, ensure your team knows the progression opportunities they have at the company and what they need to do to get there. And if there isn't a clear pathway, you should think about forging one!
Low compensation package
Also with 36% of the responses were low salary and compensation packages. This one's quite simple, people want to earn in line with the value they bring to the company. Whether that's through base salary or with performance-related bonuses, money is always a crucial aspect of employee retention. Don't want to lose your top talent? Make sure they earn what they deserve.
Lack of flexibility
A lack of flexibility in the role was the most important factor for 19% of respondents. Flexibility comes in all different variations now, from flexible start times to work-from-anywhere schemes. But with return-to-office mandates picking up steam at some larger companies, we are expecting that there will be a high level of staff turnover in these companies as a result.
Cultural differences
Some other motivations to move that were mentioned include the working culture and toxic leadership. What's clear is that employees are beginning to understand their worth and are making demands to ensure their working environment matches with their values and lifestyle. And if it doesn't, then they aren't afraid to make a change. So managers, take note of this and make sure you're doing everything in your power to keep your team happy!
