How to keep your new starter engaged

By Victoria Rybak

It's the new year, and if you're a hiring manager then you're probably eagerly awaiting the time you can recruit some new talent to your team.

The recruitment process is important to make sure you find your perfect candidate, but it's sometimes easy to forget about the importance of a smooth onboarding experience. Looking for ways to keep your new starters engaged? Well, we've put together a comprehensive list of our top tips to give them the best start to their role possible.

Start onboarding early

One sure way to help make a smooth onboarding process is by getting a head start. Why not send your new starter some resources before their first day? This could be some introductory materials or even a welcome package, because who doesn't love a freebie!

Team introductions before their first official day can also be a great way to make them feel more at ease when they start. An in-person team dinner or a virtual meetup will hopefully help to remove some of that classic first day awkwardness.

Build some anticipation

Starting at a new company can bring with it some uncertain feelings, so find a way to ensure those feelings are mainly excitement! Sharing a detailed first day/week plan jam-packed with interesting sessions is a great way to turn apprehension into enthusiasm.

Want to go one step further? A welcome message from a senior leader welcoming your new hire, saying how excited they are to have them, will do wonders for their confidence and feeling that they've made the right choice.

Make their first day as easy as possible

The first day in a new job can often be nerve-wracking, so you want to find some ways to make their first day super straight forward. Make sure they've got a copy of the company handbook for them to flick through so they have a chance to familiarise themselves with the culture of the company and the expectations of them.

Instructions for their first day can also be a great option. A step-by-step guide on how to get to the office and where to go once they've arrived is just one more way to ease any first day jitters.

Consistent communication

This is a fine line to get right. You want to make sure your new starter is settling in well but you don't want them to feel bombarded and overwhelmed from the get go. A couple short calls or emails checking in and answering any questions they may have is enough to make sure they feel valued and are off to a good start.

And there you have it, those are just a couple of gold nuggets to ensure your new starters come away from their first week knowing they made the right choice in joining your company.
