An ophthalmology company who are aiming to preserve sight worldwide through their gene therapies and surgical devices are looking for a Surgical Technical Expert to train surgical sites for clinical trials.


The company

Our client is a leading ophthalmology company who focus on the development of cutting-edge therapies for the treatment of eye diseases. With a mission to fight the impact of blindness worldwide, they develop gene-therapy products to preserve sight.

They are developing gene therapies and surgical devices that will aim to preserve healthy eye tissues slow down the progression of dry eye and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This role offers you a unique opportunity to join this mission.


The role

As a Surgical Technical Expert, you’ll join the Surgical Training and Education Team. The core focus of this role is a the in-field surgical training for clinical studies associated with the product development. You’ll work with training and clinical team members to train surgeons on clinical trial procedures. You’ll be a true expert in surgical procedures and will provide a wide range of support to surgical staff to ensure that clinical sites are ready for trials.

Undertaking this training is not your only focus, however, as you will also be helping to develop detailed education plans for the execution of clinical trials, including budget, facility and content needs. If you’re a customer focused person who is able to build strong technical knowledge, this role could be perfect for you.


Responsibilities include:

  • Interacting with customers and clinical trial sites
  • Delivering clinical programs
  • Carrying out hands-on surgical training and skills development
  • Managing the execution of training and associate follow ups
  • Clinical/surgical site support for all clinical/surgical staff
  • Training sites on tissue sampling and storage during studies
  • Assist in developing training materials
  • Providing guidance during surgical procedures in clinical trials
  • Working with the Operations team to manage training facility supplies
  • Scheduling wet labs with training sites
  • Ensuring availability of appropriate surgical equipment
  • Designing processes for tracking for continuous program improvement
  • Providing insight and feedback to stakeholders to optimise procedures


The requirements

You will have a strong technical knowledge of ophthalmic (preferably retinal) surgical procedures and tools, and knowledge of OR environments, as well as…

  • A clinical degree
  • Trained in the ophthalmic space
  • Knowledge and experience in operating rooms and clinical settings
  • Experience in assessing customer and site needs
  • Ability to tailor approaches to meet customer and site needs
  • Demonstrable ability to manage a large geographic area and prioritise effectively
  • Able to manage training equipment
  • Experience working with clinicians in clinical environments
  • Able to build strong technical knowledge and skills
  • Strong computer literacy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Project leadership experience
  • Strong customer focused mindset
