Managing Director – Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems Limited
Electrification. Electric Vehicles. Zero Emissions. Ultra-Low Carbon. It is undeniable that we hear these terms just as often as ICE, Petrol and Diesel. The automotive world is, whichever way you look at it, in the midst of a once in a generation industry shift. OEMs old and new are investing huge amounts of money to go on this journey and the focus has increased on academia as the race to develop new and improve existing technologies intensifies. The emergence of fully electric vehicles, hybrids, range extenders and future fuels presents a fascinating challenge for the future of both ICE and new powertrain technology. The creation of the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) has therefore come at an exciting and highly opportune time due to its ability to influence and impact both ICE and EV related studies.
The University of Bath has an enviable reputation for the delivery of world-class research into propulsion systems. They have a history of collaboration with globally recognised automotive companies, bringing academia and industry together to accelerate the development of future generations of zero emission vehicles. The £70m IAAPS centre has been created to strengthen this collaborative thinking, it will be a state-of the-art, national research and innovation facility that will act as a catalyst for the automotive world transitioning to the future. The new, experimental centre will contain the most technically advanced capabilities including 3E and 5E powertrain dynos, climatic control rolling roads and battery characterisation laboratory.
The appointment of a Managing Director for the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems is the first step. It is the most senior role within IAAPS Limited and will be imperative to successfully achieving the vision to be globally recognised for advanced propulsion systems research. The MD will take the lead on all commercial, operational and engineering activities and play a significant part in the continued promotion of the University to further its prominence as a world-class research and educational establishment. Electrified Technologies, Future Fuels, Energy Storage & Battery Management and Propulsion Systems Efficiencies are all key topics of research for the institute. As the leader of the facility, the successful incumbent will have exposure to these themes via a demonstrable track record of operating in a senior management capacity in the automotive industry.
