Job description

Currently supporting a Tier 1 supplier focussed on the development and production of high value, lower volume rubber/polymer-based products for a variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, medical and defence markets globally. Backed by a major rubber manufacturer, this role will play a key part in further growth of the organisation and with this part of the business expecting to grow the most.

The role

Applications Engineer

To apply engineering principles, physics and materials science for the analysis, design, testing and manufacture of products that meet the needs of the customer and the business.

To work closely with sales and marketing to understand the needs of the customer and ensure that the technical aspects of the customer expectations are correctly stated in the documents that specify development projects.

To work closely with the quality, manufacturing and production teams to ensure that the designs and manufacturing specifications meet the needs of the wider business.

To lead and manage product development projects meeting schedule, cost and quality requirements


  • Design and develop new and improved products that meet the customer, business and performance requirements.
  • Lead technical aspects of projects from conception to product launch
  • Technical support to customers
  • Maintain project documentation
  • Undertake research
  • Analyse and interpret data and information
  • Visit customers and suppliers
  • Make and test prototypes
  • Set up samples and new products in the ERP system
  • Calculate cost estimates for final product designs
  • Liaise with suppliers
  • Understand the needs of the customer and market
  • Continuously improve working methods to shorten time to market and improve quality
  • Ensure health and safety of self and others at all times.


  • The manufacturing specification of the finished product.
  • Validation of the final design against the performance, quality and cost requirements of the project.
  • Delivery of projects on time
  • Documentation of test and project work
  • Adhere to all environmental, health and safety policies, rules and work instructions
  • Ensure all work activities carried out by self or others are safe.
  • Environmental, Health & Safety Accountabilities.
  • Learn and follow EHS policies, rules and work instructions.
  • Attend required EHS training.
  • Take personal responsibility for keeping yourself and your co-workers free from injury.
  • Keep equipment in proper working condition.

The requirements

You will demonstrate the following:

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science or equivalent subject.
  • 2 years’ experience in an engineered product manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of polymer science including organic and silicone rubber is advantageous
  • Understand engineering drawings and specifications
  • Ability to manage and influence multiple projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
