Recruitment is about people, not robots

Bear with us because this may sound a bit obvious, but recruitment is all about humans.

It's quite literally people, talking to people, about other people. 

So when the robots (read: AI) started to take over in December 2022, the industry seemed to lose its collective mind just a little bit. 

Us vs. them, humans vs. AI

When ChatGPT burst onto the scene it opened an AI related floodgate, with developments happening at what feels like breakneck speed since then.

Like any new technology, AI has it's staunch supporters as well as it's naysayers. For every person saying 'wow this technology will revolutionise how I work' there's someone else going 'this technology is going to replace me and my job', and pretty much every opinion in between. 

You can see why some people are nervous, 383 lay-offs in the US so far this year have been explicitly blamed on AI, and another 15,000 on the more vague 'technological updates'. 

It's created a bit of an 'us vs. them' dynamic in a lot of industries. Take our industry. AI can intervene in the recruitment process in such a huge variety of ways - from AI powered searching tools, to CV screening, to writing job ads* - so it would be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that one day it'll totally replace human recruiters.

But is it really that binary?

It's easy to reduce this whole topic to humans vs. AI. But in reality is anything ever that simple?

Recruitment has always been and will always be a human industry, but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for technology. After all, imagine if recruiters had never embraced the modern telephone and instead did all their work via carrier pigeon? That would be ridiculous, wouldn't it. 

Understanding how to use tech to enhance what a team of humans can do is key here.

The bottom line

I guess what we're trying to say is that it's easy to feel threatened by new technology, but harnessed properly and used by humans to supercharge what they can do and there's no need to fear it.

If anything, AI makes the human parts of recruitment even more important than ever. A GPT tool can't replace the coaching given by a team of experienced recruiters or the relationships built over hundreds of phone calls and tens of face to face meetings. And it certainly can't replace the fact that on a human level, people like to deal with people.
